What is the difference between Tae Kwon Do and other martial arts like Karate?

At what age can children start?
Our experience has shown that children ages three and up will be able to take the greatest advantage from Tae Kwon Do classes. Starting at age 2 1/2, children are eligible to participate in our trial program, which allows our instructors to work with them in small groups and evaluate their readiness for group classes. Our staff will use their experience to recommend the best course of action for you to take with your child.
Will Tae Kwon Do increase my child’s aggressiveness?
Absolutely not! All children are taught from the first lesson that a true “Tae Kwon Doist” never misuses their martial arts skills. Throughout their training students are reminded that being physically and mentally tough doesn’t allow one to be tough with others. Instead, Tae Kwon Do students are expected to be humble, courteous, respectful and careful about when and where they practice their skills. The instructors at Y. S. Rho Martial Arts continuously remind students that Tae Kwon Do is a form of exercise and self improvement not a tool for bullying.
Is it safe to learn?
Tae Kwon Do is safe and fun for students of all ages and physical abilities. Classes are supervised by expert instructors. All students are taught techniques in a step by step manner and at their own pace. Separating classes by belt levels, a thorough stretching routine, matted flooring, and the use of protective safety equipment are all part of our commitment to ensuring student safety.
How much does it cost after the trial program?
Y. S. Rho Martial Arts offers a few different programs. The cost of the program will depend on length of program, payment option and number of members on the program. Substantial discounts are available for family members. It is recommended that all new students participate in the no obligation trial program, this will allow the instructors to see which course would be the best for them.
What if I never did martial arts before or if I am currently out of shape?
At Y. S. Rho Martial Arts, we have ongoing enrollment, so beginners are always welcome. Our special trial program makes it easy for new students of all fitness levels to get started. First time students receive small group instruction designed to answer common questions and provide an introduction to the basics of Tae Kwon Do. In addition the belt system used in Tae Kwon Do allows all students to train at their own pace and to improve their physical condition gradually.
How often do students attend classes and how flexible is the schedule?
In order to attain benefits and progress at a reasonable rate we recommend that students attend classes two to three times per week. Our convenient locations and full time staff allow us to offer an extremely flexible schedule. Classes for all levels and ages are held several times a week and students are able to choose the classes that work out best for them.

How long does it take to become a Black Belt?
The Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do is symbolic of an advanced level of skill as well as above average physical, mental, and emotional strength. The length of study necessary to attain a Black Belt varies depending on one’s effort and dedication. On average, our students train for a period of three years to attain Black Belt status.
How long does it take to start seeing results?
Studying Tae Kwon Do has lifelong benefits and is designed to be a lifelong study. However, initial benefits start appearing after a few months of consistent practice. Children begin to show improved listening, confidence, and self discipline. Adults gain more energy and feel healthier. Over time, the benefits become even more apparent and dramatic.
